SOLO – Sound Promenade Project

The SOLO – Porto Helsinki Sound Promenade connects local sounds with personal and collective narratives, fostering a deeper understanding of how we experience space and sound. João Luís will map a street, a line that could be the same in Helsinki and Porto, to create a video-sound installation in which the landscapes of both cities overlap, opening the possibility for a dialogue between places.

João Luís Matos Lopes is a percussionist/composer based in Helsinki since 2016, with an MA in Music from the Sibelius Academy. He co-founded the KAôS Global Music Collective, Coletivo Peixe Fora D’Água, and Colectivo Azul, a collaborative project that expands his work as a performer and creator. His work includes performances with Talvi Sirkus Ilo, a summer tour with the Sápmi band SOLJU, and collaborations with diverse Finnish groups like DanchevDomain and MeNiños. João is a featured artist in Global Art Point and Artists With Evidence.

Ruusu Saksio

Ruusu Saksio’s performance explores the Nordic tradition of tralling: singing instrumental folk dance tunes with the voice as an instrument. Inspired by village traditions where songs carried the dancers when no fiddler was around, the performance combines Nordic folk music with stop-motion animations of dancing puppets. A vibrant meeting of music, movement, and cultural heritage from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland.

Ruusu Saksio is a Finnish folk musician who is just graduating from the Nordic Master in Folk Music programme in Sibelius Academy. She uses accordion and voice for storytelling, and during her masters has been concentrating on the trall traditions of Northern Europe. In addition to musical expressions she also brings in a small element of puppets in the form of stop motion animations, to bring the element of dance and story to the performance.

ABOUT SONGSCAPES

SONGSCAPES encompasses moments of togetherness and inspiration, through sharing the diverse landscapes that a song can have. It is a project run by students of the Sibelius Academy Global Music Department and independent cultural producers based in Helsinki.

Our motivation is to showcase local Helsinki based song composers and song performers and perhaps through this establish a local scene.

Vapaan taiteen tila is the place where it all happens once a month. You are welcome to listen to the music landscapes of Helsinki based artists, performing original compositions and arrangements of songs.
