SOLO MUSIC FOR PERCUSSION – THREE PREMIERES FROM THE NORDICS

Composers Tytti Arola (FI), Þorkell Nordal (IS) and Finnur Karlsson (IS) have created new solo percussion works in collaboration with Kalle Hakosalo (FI). This trio of works constitute an interesting entity, which explores percussion repertoire in new, experimental ways, and with the help of extra-musical media.

There will be a total of two concerts: at 14:00 and 19:00.

Entry fee 10/5e – free of charge for the Arts University students.

After the concert it is possible to meet and discuss with the composers and the performer. A heartfelt welcome! 🙂

The composition work of the concert has been supported by The Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Musiikin edistämissäätiö, Kone Foundation, Tónskáldasjóður ríkisútvarpsins and Statens Kunstfond.

AN ITTY-BIT OF INFO ABOUT THE WORKS

Tytti Arola’s ’Yrttitarha’ is an installation-composition for a percussionist and herbs. The performer communicates with the herb garden spreading to the stage. The piece wonders about the balance – how we treat others and ourselves: take care, cherish, utilize and enjoy.

Þorkell Nordal’s ’Cantata’ is a concert installation where the performer explores and interacts with the instruments on the stage using mallets, objects, voice and electronics. The manner of exploration ranges from the robotic to the humanlike while the sonic results gradually start to blur the difference.

Finnur Karlsson’s ’Monster’ is inspired by the American B-movie “The Beach Girls and the Monster” and partly consists of a rearrangement of short, never more than two second snippets from it. The music the percussionist plays is a translation of visual impulses from the accompanying video.
