Fin de section gathers three works, A–Z (2023), To Pieces (2024), and Fin de section (2024), by artist Ville Laurinkoski in Vapaan Taiteen Tila (Free Art Space), Helsinki. In the works, from years 2023 and 2024, presented previously as installations, a sound formed by or emerging from Laurinkoski’s body together with an array of samples constructs a new situation along the original renderings of the works, thus underlining the scenic nature of them, as the prior, static and limited setting forms now into a collective dramaturgy. Encountered and produced gestures are familiar and, at the same time, unrecognisable, carrying off the public to slumber and disquiet ease.

In Laurinkoski’s practice, the social moment of viewing moves further from a deliberative common objective, revealing and subverting the invisible infrastructure of the situation. A diffused contemporaneity appears as an invisible scripture or a protocol, an utterance, a negative echo of sorts.

________

Ville Laurinkoski (b. 1996) is a visual artist based in Copenhagen. Alongside studying at Ed Atkins’ class at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Visual Arts (BFA, MFA), Laurinkoski has graduated from The University of the Arts Helsinki, Academy of Fine Arts (MFA) and completed Maumaus Independent Study Programme in Lisbon in 2021.

Laurinkoski’s suggestive interiors and chamber pieces that comprise mass-produced objects and misfit materials are often being imbued with sound and voice, either as soundtracks or live performances, and are sometimes being presented as stand-alone works. Overall, the sources and materials span from worn-out literature, commercial music, and different genres of autobiographical writing to painting, stained mattresses and partitions, enchanting the negative and oblique, taking an infrastructure critical turn transforming the backstages of the contemporary, the unwanted states of loneliness and intimacy, to collective sceneries of melancholy and relief.

Laurinkoski has previously exhibited in Porvoo Art Hall (2018), Amos Rex (2020), Kuva/Tila (2022, 2023, 2024), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (2023), Pro Artibus Foundation’s Galleri Elverket (2024), the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design (2024) amongst others, and performed at Overgaden (2024), Art Hub Copenhagen (2024) to mention a few. They are part of artist collective Jennifee-See Alternate.

The artist’s work is supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
