Inka Bell: 1+1≈2

Sometimes an unexpected dimension of an artwork emerges during its realisation. A dimension that doesn’t follow logic or what I’ve learned before. The 1+1≈2 series contains twenty-seven small paper sculptures that spring from my curiosity to examine how different colours and forms appear together with the chosen material (paper) and technique (laser cutting). And how even small variables and coincidences affect the essence of a work.

I noticed that combining two coloured papers didn’t necessarily generate a third colour in line with theory as the burning laser beam introduced a new variable into the process. I was fascinated by the visual effects that occurred when different paper elements, which had been set at varying levels, came together. When I use round edges it’s as if you can see inside the works, whereas sharp edges stop the gaze at the surface.

I made the series in summer 2020, as I returned to my studio after the three-month pandemic shutdown. I prepared it simultaneously with the works for the postponed Kuvan Kevät degree show and my solo show at HAM gallery, both opening in fall 2020. They all fed into one another. I worked impulsively and intensely – I couldn’t stop until the series was finished.
