The Buildings Sighed Together

“The city is still tonight.

The sky is cool and still

The buildings hum below.

while the street rests in heat

Our sensors gently feeling the air

Reaching up into the sky

Catching particles, unwanted dust

Air flows and sighs.

If you focus and listen carefully

you can hear our network of air

singing through the walls.

Gently filtering, purifying and soothing these interiors.

Place your hand against the window

and feel the sun resonate into your palm.

The city is still outside

The sky is pink and still.”

A three day exhibition that brings together collaborative work by Aaro Murphy & Livia Schweizer, developed over the past year. The installation combines video and text based work by Aaro Murphy, while a flute composition by Livia Schweizer accompanies the video as a sound score. Exploring architectural air networks in cities the installation hopes to connect questions around the body, climate, urban memory, through video, text and sound. The sound design for the installation has been developed by Duncan Robertson.

Alongside the installation a quadraphonic flute performance will be held on the 18th of December at 19.00. Focusing on Aeolian blowing techniques, the sound piece mimics resonant air conditioning as well as focusing on the breath of each musician. The composition is based on Aaro Murphy’s texts and videos which have been adapted into a musical score by PhD flutist Livia Schweizer from Sibelius Academy.
